ECM Hosts PrintStator in Motion Show and Mini Expo 

ECM hosted the second annual PrintStator in Motion event in Needham, Mass. The occasion offered exclusive insight into the past, present, and future of electric motor innovation—and ECM’s progression from startup to an emerging enterprise entity.   

As a company, ECM pairs advanced Motor CAD and patented PCB Stator technology to power the design and manufacture of electric motors that are lighter, quieter, and more compact and energy efficient across multiple use cases. 

The upsides of that model were on full display at this year’s PrintStator in Motion event. For 2024, we added more on-stage demos, thought leadership, and ECM’s very own Mini Expo to showcase PrintStator designed innovation and products.  

By the numbers, PrintStator in Motion 2024 had:   

  • ≈ 90 attendees  
  • 10 exhibits 
  • 1 panel 
  • 2 CEO keynotes; and 
  • 10 speakers 

Here are additional highlights from ECM’s annual gathering. 

Encircling PrintStator in Motion’s audience this year were 10 exhibits incorporating innovation designed on ECM’s award-winning Motor CAD platform.  

ECM Engineers Showcasing ECM’s Evaluation Motor Range

Mobility solution company Össur—a market leader publicly traded on NASDAQ—exhibited a new powered knee prosthesis prototype with a PrintStator designed PCB Stator electric motor.  

Speaking on stage, Össur’s David Langlois highlighted the inherent benefits that PCB Stator technology brings to innovation in medical prosthetics. For Össur’s Prosthetic Knee application, those include higher torque density (which is useful when climbing stairs), lighter weight, and more compact design.  

Langlois also spoke to overcoming some initial hesitation in adopting PCB Stator design. “When a colleague first showed me a video on ECM’s technology, I said, ‘That’s really cool, but it will probably never work.’ We’ll we ultimately tried it, and it did,” said Langlois.

Los Angelas based film equipment startup Nodo Film exhibited its groundbreaking Inertia Wheels Max controller, now being used on Hollywood film sets, and soon to be released Torq Head cinematic camera head.

A quick stroll from Nodo, electronics manufacturing company PCI, a Celestica subsidiary displayed their optimized 5 hp PCB Stator electric motor and controller.

PrintStator in Motion’s 2024 Mini Expo was complete with three exhibits by ECM. That included ECM’s noise reduction demo of a PCB Stator designed blender that’s up to 30 dB quieter than a conventional option and a live PrintStator demo booth.

PrintStator in Motion 2024 marked nearly one-year since the public release of ECM’s Motor CAD as a software as a service product (SaaS). This year’s program brought more forward ECM’s vision and plans to advance adoption of PCB Stator electric motor design.  

The event kicked off with an overview by ECM’s Chief Scientist, Dr. Steven Shaw, on the latest advances in electric motor customization and optimization that can be achieved via PrintStator.

Nodo Film founder Boyd Hobbs explained how his startup partnered with ECM to create a film controller with optimized motion control that’s now being used in major Hollywood productions.  

PrintStator in Motion ‘24 also hosted its very first panel discussion on the future of electric motor design, moderated by the Association for Advancing Automation’s VP of Marketing Deb Kling.

ECM’s Angela Vellante and Ryan Duffy offered a live design demonstration of a 1hp  premium efficiency motor. They were followed by ECM engineers Mark Puglia and Tom Ungersma, who ran through ECM’s Evaluation Motor Kits, that extend the opportunity to order a range of pre-designed motors incorporating ECM’s patented PCB Stator innovation in .5hp, 1hp, or 5hp options.

PrintStator in Motion concluded with a presentation by Rob Luchars on ECM’s rapid evolution and growth over the last several years, followed by a first-time joint Q&A session with Rob, ECM CEO Brian Casey and CTO Dr. Steven Shaw.
